How Hive Athletic Supports Groups and Individual Players

Hive Athletic is an inclusive community that welcomes anyone to sign up and start playing in our leagues or events, without the need for a full team. This helps alleviate concerns about isolation or the difficulty of finding a team. Our player pool consists of individual signups (referred to as “free agents”) and “small group” signups, which are groups of friends who are kept together but don’t have enough players to form a full team.

Getting Teamed Up

During registration, we gather information about skill level, competitive goals, age, gender, and any friends you’d like to be partnered with. Using this information, we do our best to form teams of similar age and skill level, while also balancing league requirements. The larger the free agent pool, the more we can curate balanced and fun teams.

When possible, free agent teams are placed in the more casual divisions and may, in some cases, have some flexibility with the gender ratio rules that established teams must follow.

Free agent teams tend to be slightly larger than seasoned teams. We’ve found that larger teams help players meet and connect with more people. Our goal is for these free agent teams to go on and form their own established teams in future seasons.

Players will receive multiple emails from the league before the season starts and will be notified of their team assignment about one week before opening day.

Expanding Your Circle

While we strive to pair you with great teammates, we also encourage players to interact with others throughout the league. To facilitate this, there is a happy hour after every game which is a  fun way to get teams interacting at post-game gatherings, either at the field or at one of our sponsor bars. It’s a great way to mix new and seasoned players.

We also host “Mix & Match” events between seasons, which are casual, open play nights designed to let new players try a sport and meet others.
